GPSR warnings and safety information: what should be visible online?

Warnings are not a universal text block to paste onto every product. Article 19 links the online offer to warnings and safety information that must accompany the product under GPSR or applicable EU harmonisation legislation.

Practical rule

If a warning or safety statement is required on the product, packaging or accompanying document under the applicable rules, it should also form part of the online offer in a language consumers in the target Member State can easily understand.

Not every product needs the same warning

Risk depends on the product. Toys, electrical accessories, beauty tools and household products can be subject to different specific rules. Do not copy a generic warning simply to fill a field.

Visibility before purchase

The point of online safety information is to let consumers see relevant information in the offer, rather than only after opening the parcel. Review product tabs, accordions and mobile layouts.

  • Readable on mobile.
  • Available before checkout.
  • Avoid tiny warning text embedded only in images.

Language of safety information

Article 19 refers to a language that consumers can easily understand, as determined by the Member State where the product is made available. A multilingual store should not automatically show supplier safety information only in the supplier’s source language.

Automated checks without overclaiming

A scanner can search for warning and safety signals on a page, but it cannot always decide which exact warning is legally required for a specific product. Merqivio therefore reports “not found” or “possible attention point” instead of automatically declaring a product illegal.

FAQ

Does every product need a warning?

No. It depends on the product and applicable rules. The online offer should display the warnings and safety information required for that product.

Can safety information exist only in a PDF?

The information should be clear and visible in the online offer. Relying only on a hard-to-find PDF can be impractical, so review the presentation carefully.

Can Merqivio determine every sector-specific warning?

Merqivio can check visible signals and flag potentially missing information, but it does not replace product-specific legal or technical assessment.

EU LAW UPDATE · 06-09-2026

Scanners updated for the latest EU rules

Latest legal review: 6 September 2026. Merqivio revalidated relevant scan criteria against EUR-Lex and official European Commission sources.

PPWR: now applicable

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 applies since 12 August 2026. The PPWR scan therefore treats it as applicable law, checks visible packaging and environmental-claim signals, and keeps physical labels, PFAS, material composition, EPR and future harmonised labels as evidence/manual checks where a URL scan cannot establish compliance.

What this means

Merqivio distinguishes publicly demonstrable website issues, future duties and requirements that need product, supplier or internal business evidence. This avoids both missed risks and false failures. A scan is an automated risk assessment, not legal advice.
