GPSR and dropshipping: sell products without losing control of safety information

Dropshipping does not remove the need for safe and traceable products. The practical risk is often that a store publishes products before reliable manufacturer, responsible-person and safety information is available.

Key point for dropshippers

Know the roles in your supply chain, verify that the manufacturer and any EU responsible person are real and identifiable, and make sure required information appears on the product offer before actively targeting EU consumers.

“Dropshipper” does not automatically mean “just an intermediary”

Your legal role depends on the actual supply chain, branding, import arrangements and how the product is placed on the market. Direct shipping by a supplier does not by itself determine every obligation.

When sourcing outside the EU, document who the manufacturer is, who places the product on the EU market and which EU-based responsible economic operator applies.

Verify supplier data before publishing

Supplier feeds often contain title, image and price but little reliable product-safety data. Do not automatically publish every new item without checks. Make manufacturer, contact, responsible-person and safety fields part of product onboarding.

  • Obtain manufacturer name and contact details.
  • Verify EU responsible-person information where relevant.
  • Keep product identifiers and model information.
  • Obtain warnings/instructions in the required languages.

Your product page is still the visible offer

Even if a third-party supplier handles fulfilment, consumers see your online offer. Check what is actually visible on the page, not only what exists in a supplier portal.

Merqivio can inspect public product pages for visible GPSR signals. It cannot confirm that a supplier internally holds every required technical document.

Turn GPSR into a catalogue process

Dropshipping catalogues can change quickly. A one-off manual audit becomes outdated fast. Use required data fields, supplier standards and periodic scans so new products do not go live without the information you expect.

FAQ

Am I always the importer when dropshipping?

Not automatically. It depends on the actual chain and who places the product on the EU market. Determine the role for each sourcing model.

Can I copy data directly from AliExpress or a supplier feed?

Only if it is reliable, current and belongs to the exact product. Verify the source and identity instead of copying fields blindly.

Does Merqivio verify the supplier itself?

Merqivio checks the publicly visible product offer. It does not automatically validate internal supplier files or the legal authenticity of documents.

Check how GPSR information appears on your product pages

The free Quick Scan samples up to 10 products. A paid full report starts a separate catalogue scan of all publicly discoverable product pages within the scan limit.

EU LAW UPDATE · 21-08-2026

Our scanners follow current EU rules

Merqivio maintains its scan criteria as EU legislation changes. On 21 August 2026 the checks below were revalidated against the official texts.

PPWR: packaging and PFAS

Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR) applies from 12 August 2026. PFAS concentration limits now apply to food-contact packaging. The GPSR/Product Safety Scan therefore flags relevant food and food-contact products for packaging-compliance and traceability review. Merqivio does not automatically fail a page merely because a PFAS test result is not publicly displayed.

Why this matters

Failure to comply with applicable EU consumer, product-safety and market rules can lead to enforcement, corrective measures, sales restrictions and — depending on the rule and national enforcement — financial penalties. A Merqivio scan is an automated risk assessment, not legal advice.
