GTIN, MPN, SKU and brand: why identifiers matter for AI Shopping

Identifiers help systems determine which exact product is offered and reduce incorrect matching between similar items.

What you should know

GTIN is useful when a valid global identifier exists.

MPN, SKU and brand add identity and variant context.

Where ecommerce stores go wrong

Stores sometimes reuse one SKU across variants or put internal codes in GTIN fields.

Missing brand also weakens matching.

What you can improve

Use genuine identifiers, keep them variant-specific when appropriate and keep values consistent across pages, structured data and feeds.

What Merqivio does

Merqivio checks publicly accessible product pages and machine-readable signals. No passwords are required and nothing is changed on your store. A readiness score does not guarantee inclusion or ranking in an external AI shopping platform.

Our scanners follow current EU rules

Merqivio maintains its scan criteria as EU legislation changes. On 21 August 2026 the checks below were revalidated against the official texts.

Digital Omnibus on AI: chatbot transparency was not delayed

Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 has been in force since 27 July 2026. Rules for certain high-risk AI systems were delayed until 2 December 2027 or 2 August 2028, but Article 50 for direct AI interaction has applied since 2 August 2026. AI Shopping Readiness therefore distinguishes demonstrated AI-chatbot signals from ordinary chatbots that require manual classification. Ordinary AI-generated product copy is not automatically failed.

Why this matters

Failure to comply with applicable EU consumer, product-safety and market rules can lead to enforcement, corrective measures, sales restrictions and — depending on the rule and national enforcement — financial penalties. A Merqivio scan is an automated risk assessment, not legal advice.
