Crossed-out prices and was/now claims: when does a promotion become unclear?

A crossed-out price is powerful, but it also creates a strong expectation that the number is a meaningful reference for the claimed saving.

What you need to know

A “was €99, now €69” claim is different from a comparison with RRP. Those references should not be blended without clarity.

Category cards and sale badges can make a price claim even if the detail page contains more context.

Where online stores get it wrong

Stores often display different references in collection pages, product pages and checkout, creating inconsistent percentages or former prices.

What you can do in practice

Review product pages, collections, search, feeds and banners. Use one source of truth for promotion display.

How Merqivio helps

Merqivio scans public product pages without passwords or admin access. A one-off scan checks visible price claims; historical verification requires stored price history.
