How to fix Google Merchant Center misrepresentation

“Misrepresentation” is one of the broadest Merchant Center policy issues. There is rarely one universal error. The safest approach is a full review of business identity, transparency, policies, checkout, prices, product data and the entire customer journey before requesting another review.

Short answer

Do not treat misrepresentation as a single feed error. First confirm the account-level issue, then compare your webshop, Merchant Center settings and product data and remove every visible inconsistency. Request a review only when business details, returns, shipping, checkout, product information and prices are demonstrably consistent.

1. What does “misrepresentation” mean in Merchant Center?

Google applies its misrepresentation policy when information about a business, product, offer or customer experience may be misleading, unclear or insufficiently transparent. This can be broader than one wrong price or one missing attribute.

The core issue is trust. Shoppers should understand who they are buying from, what they are buying, what it costs, when it will arrive, how returns work and how to contact the seller. Google can assess multiple visible signals across the webshop.

  • False or conflicting business name, identity or contact information.
  • Important conditions or costs that are hidden or unclear until late in checkout.
  • Product details, prices or availability that do not match between feed and webshop.
  • Claims, discounts, badges or offers that are not clearly supportable.
  • A webshop that appears unfinished, generic or insufficiently transparent about the seller.
Important: Merqivio can check visible and technically measurable risks, but it cannot access Google’s internal review signals. Google alone decides whether an account is approved.

2. Why does Google often not provide one exact cause?

For technical product-data errors Google can often identify a specific attribute. A policy issue such as misrepresentation can be much broader. The result may come from a combination of small inconsistencies that look harmless individually but reduce overall trust.

Do not search only for one “bad page”. Review the store as a new shopper and reviewer would: homepage, product listing, landing page, cart, checkout, payment, delivery, returns and customer service.

  • Record the exact Merchant Center issue text and date.
  • Confirm whether it is an account issue, warning or visibility limitation.
  • List every place where business, pricing, shipping and return information appears.
  • Compare pages with Merchant Center settings, product feed and checkout.

3. Check business identity and contact details

Google explicitly points to clear, current business information as part of transparency. Shoppers should easily understand who operates the store and how to contact the business. Use one consistent trading or brand identity and explain the company behind the webshop clearly.

Compare the homepage, contact page, footer, terms, checkout, payment environment and Merchant Center for contradictions.

  • Business or trading name is written consistently.
  • Contact email works and preferably uses your own domain.
  • Phone number or another genuine contact method is clear.
  • Address and relevant registration details are correct wherever shown.
  • About/business information explains what the company does.
  • Checkout and payment name do not create an unexplained brand or company switch.

If your brand name differs from the legal company name, make the relationship understandable. A shopper should not suddenly encounter an unknown business name only when paying.

4. Check returns, shipping, payment and checkout

Return and refund terms should be easy to find and specific. Even if you do not accept returns, state that clearly. Shipping countries, costs, handling time and expected delivery should match what shoppers see during purchase.

Checkout must work end to end without unexpected restrictions, costs or identity changes. Google also expects customers to be able to complete a purchase using a conventional payment method.

  • Return window, conditions, method, fees and refund timing are clear.
  • Shipping charges and delivery times match product pages, policy and Merchant Center.
  • No mandatory charges are hidden until late checkout.
  • At least one conventional payment method is available and checkout uses HTTPS.
  • Cart and checkout work on mobile and desktop.
  • No broken policy links, empty pages or placeholder content.
Google stresses that return information must be easy to find and that Merchant Center return information should match the policy on the webshop.

5. Check product data, prices, availability and offers

A trustworthy store shows the same offer in Merchant Center and on the landing page. Test real products, including all products named in Merchant Center issues.

Pay special attention to variants and promotions. A base price can be correct while Google is referencing another colour or size. A sale price must also be genuinely visible and available to the shopper.

  • Price and currency match feed, structured data and visible product page.
  • Availability is correct: in stock, out of stock or pre-order.
  • Selected variant matches colour, size, image and price in product data.
  • Promotions and discount claims are genuinely available with clear conditions.
  • Title, brand, image and description represent the actual product sold.
  • Shipping or other charges do not change unexpectedly.

6. Check trust, claims and branding

Google includes false identity, misleading offers and untrustworthy business practices in the misrepresentation policy. Avoid marketing promises you cannot substantiate and keep branding coherent and genuinely yours.

A polished design alone does not establish trust. Transparency is more important than visual perfection. A simple store with clear company information, honest prices and clear terms can be stronger than a polished site full of generic content and unexplained claims.

  • Do not use fake badges, fabricated reviews or unsupported “official dealer” claims.
  • Avoid artificial scarcity or countdowns unless they are genuinely applicable.
  • Explain unusually large discounts and their conditions.
  • Use consistent branding and remove supplier or template elements that cause confusion.
  • Check for old company names, old domains or locations in copied text.
  • Make sure customer service, delivery and returns match what the site promises.

7. Run a full audit before requesting a review

Google advises merchants with misrepresentation or account suspensions to audit the website for transparency, standardise business details and make sure pricing and availability match landing pages before requesting a review. Treat the review as the final step after remediation.

After changes, test the website again in a private browser and on mobile. Clear cache where needed and verify that customers and crawlers can see the corrected version.

  • Check business name, address and contact information everywhere.
  • Check return, shipping and payment information against Merchant Center.
  • Test several products from listing through the payment step.
  • Compare price, availability and variants with the current product feed.
  • Remove old pages, placeholders, bad redirects and contradictory content.
  • Document the fixes before requesting review.
A review should be the end of remediation, not the start of diagnosis. Google notes that account reviews can take several working days and complex cases can take longer.

8. What if Google flags misrepresentation again?

Do not automatically submit the same review again without new investigation. Revisit your checklist and inspect easily missed areas such as the payment descriptor, mobile checkout, old footer links, language versions, feed variants, return information and differences between brand and legal company name.

If no single cause stands out, assess the webshop again as one complete customer journey. A broad policy problem often requires more than one cosmetic change. The goal is a demonstrably consistent and transparent shopping experience.

What Merqivio can and cannot do

Merqivio can flag visible and technically measurable risks such as missing business information, return and shipping information, price or product inconsistencies, HTTPS, structured data, broken elements and transparency signals.

Merqivio is independent and cannot access Google’s internal policy review. A scan or full report therefore cannot guarantee approval, but it can help you find and prioritise known controllable risks before another review.

Frequently asked questions

Is misrepresentation the same as a product disapproval?

Usually not. Misrepresentation is generally a broader policy or account-level issue, while a product disapproval can concern one product or attribute.

Why does Google not tell me exactly which page is wrong?

A policy assessment can involve multiple signals, so there may not be one single page or setting that fully explains the decision.

Must my legal company name exactly match my brand name?

Not necessarily, but the relationship should be clear and not misleading. Keep the webshop, checkout, Merchant Center and payment environment logically consistent.

Can differences in return or shipping policies cause problems?

Yes. Google expects clear policy information and stresses that Merchant Center information should match the webshop.

Can Merqivio guarantee the issue will disappear?

No. Google alone decides approval. Merqivio helps identify, prioritise and systematically review visible risks.
